The photographer's journey from the roar of combat to the stillness of the Maasai Mara spawned a resplendent collection of genuinely rare, hand-shot, non-digital irreplaceable 35mm slides of African wildlife and landscapes that no stock images can ever capture. Each shot the product of planning, persistence, and patience until that one moment when just the right composition came into the frame.
From Service to Solitude
Returning home from Vietnam, Gary found his world transformed. A profound need for silence and connection replaced the mayhem and noise of combat. It was then the camera became not a tool but an anchor, a way to re-engage with the beauty of the world he fought to protect.
The Call of the Wild
The numerous African safaris that followed were not vacations but pilgrimages. Armed with his Nikon and a deep reverence for life, Gary captured raw and unscripted moments of the African wild.
From a thundering migration to an African gray crowned crane gliding silently overhead, each slide is a testament to the legacy of a man who saw the world through its most majestic and vulnerable inhabitants.
The story of GKT Photography is one forged in the quiet intensity of observation of the African plains. But the story of Gary K. Thompson began long before, in the discipline required of a young man in service. This page chronicles Gary’s sometimes difficult journey from the shadows of war to the vibrant light of the wild.
Service, Sacrifice, and Courage
Gary, an operating-room nurse, stood shoulder to shoulder with his trauma surgeons working tirelessly in forward mobile surgical hospitals to stabilize the critically wounded for transport to rear evac hospitals.
Often under Vietcong mortar fire, Gary intimately knew the chaos and cost of war.
Planning and Patience
Nothing in the wild can be rushed. Gary mapped the land, read the sky, and settled into quietude, knowing that patience and persistence would draw the scene—and the story—into the frame.
Mission and Legacy
Today, GKT Photography exists to share the regalness and splendor of the African wild his lens caught. Our mission is to preserve and distribute the spirit of the wild, from the quiet elegance of a gazelle at rest to the power and majesty of a leopard on the chase, caught with lens and light.
Gary’s images remind us of the intricate balance of Nature. They are not just photographs; they are stories of the nobility, grandeur, and enduring dominion of the natural world.
